which have gone a little rusty, i have tried using a brillo pad but it didn't get all the rust off,

Get some Barkeeper's Friend. It's a powdered cleanser that does great things to metal! It doesn't scratch, isn't nasty to use and is cheap! How great is that?

I use it on everything from my stainless steel cookware to my copper bowls
