Fleur de Lis Soap

I received a cake of goat's milk soap embossed with a pretty fleur de lis from my mother-in-law for Christmas, so decided to photograph it...

Frugal Beauty

Do you, like me, have a large collection of beauty products? I spend approximately £80 every month on toiletries. According to Google in the UK most women spend between £50-100 each month. I have to confess that I almost have a heart attack when I'm doing my shopping in Boots & the cashier cheerfully says "That'll be £83.72 then please." I finally got a Boots Advantage card a few months back which has come in handy upon occasion. Need some Iburofen but you're completely broke? Use the points on your Advantage card, yay! Also they send you out vouchers which are obviously useful. However I feel that I really need to bring that average monthly spend back down. I'm a sucker for a deal as much as the next person (read: woman) so sometimes I end up buying more than I intended. Buy one Body Wash & get the second half price? Awesome! Except.. why am I buying Body Wash in the first place? What's wrong with good old fashioned soap? It costs less, lasts longer & is naturally    antibactericidal to boot. Basically soap just isn't fashionable! Body wash, bubble bath, shower gel, make-up remover, cleansers & toners are. The honest truth is that these overpriced & over packaged products just aren't all necessary. ...

jim jil bang: my new favorite word (Minneapolis needs a Korean Spa!)

Might be my new favorite word (or is it a phrase?)  Right up there with bibimbap , which makes me think I might need to add Korea to my places-to-visit list.  I visited a friend in Los Angeles last weekend and we had a great day trip to the Wi Spa–which is a jimjilbang–or Korean bath house.

Please let me know if I am mistaken, but I don’t think Minneapolis has a place like the Wi Spa , which confounds me!

I can’t really begrudge the Angelenos for embracing such a great idea, but I can laugh at their “cold snap,” which meant 60s during the day and 40s at night.  I feel I must point out that if anyone requires 3 different soaking tub temps, a salt, jade, and clay sauna to warm in–it is us, the Minneapolitans, the St. Paulites, the Minnesotans! Weather hardiness competition aside, though, let me tell you about this awesome place.

From their “about” page:

Wi Spa features three levels of world-class spa services spanning more than 48,000 square feet. With women-only floor, men-only floor and co-ed floor, guests can choose their level and style of luxury. Gender-separated floors feature hot baths, cold baths, dry sauna and steam sauna. The co-ed floor, called the jimjilbang, boasts an additional five exclusive sauna rooms with specialty minerals — the Ice Sauna, Clay Sauna, Salt Sauna, Jade Sauna and Bulgama Sauna. These special minerals allow guests to purge toxins from the body and refresh the mind and soul. It’s like a big gym full of relaxation.  They do have a workout area, but the parts I visited were the women’s floor and the co-ed floor.  On the women’s floor there is a series of soaking tubs from cold to hot (you’ve gotta be tough for the cold tub), a typical sauna (with a TV showing Korean soaps), a steam room, standing showers and bathing stations with little stools that I think are typical of bath houses in many places in the world.  There is also a room for the Korean “Buff” or scrub treatment–in which you basically are super-loofa’d from head to toe.
