When things com together

A little while ago, I threw the gauntlet down and proclaimed that the mutilated and drawn-on walls in the living room and dining room, along with the entire grey-meets-Pepto-Bismol-pink bathroom, were soon going to be history. I have been thinking of what colors I want for said ugly bathroom for over a year (yes, really for a whole year!), because I wanted to be sure of what I wanted. It so happened that the children had a dentist appointment down in Wausau (1 1/2 hours south), which also had a Joanne’s. What great timing, right?

Thanksgiving Planning

* We're bringing Potatoes Au Gratin and I've decided to do up a cranberry compotey-thingie to go with dessert, since I DID randomly buy some cranberries the other day. (This is what happens when you let the pregnant and ravenous girl go to Trader Joe's by herself. I don't even like cranberries.) But hey, compote! I actually have no idea how to make a compote and am winging it completely, after deciding to throw cranberries, an awful lot of sugar, and the random contents of my pantry -- ie. the innards of two oranges, the dregs of a bottle of OJ that mostly hadn't gone off, some terrible brandy, half a vanilla bean, a stub of ginger and a tiny bit of Chinese five spice powder -- into a pot and boiling it until it's saucy. So far, so good. * Nathan is also making his yearly cheesecake, which for some reason is a task that can't be started before 9:45pm and always involves staying up until 2:00am.
